An Apology from Alec Baldwin

Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin has apologized for a recent joke about mail-order brides that triggered outrage and led to demands for an apology from the Philippine government. In a May 12 interview with US talk show host David Letterman, Baldwin said he was thinking about "getting a Filipina mail-order bride", a remark that sparked uproar in the Philippines.Baldwin has now apologized for the comments in a blog posted on the Huffington Post saying he was sorry for "anyone who took offense.""I believe that most people understood that this was a joke and took it as such," Baldwin said.Baldwin's interview has been widely circulated on the video sharing site YouTube, angering the huge Filipino diaspora. At least three members of the Philippine Senate had also demanded an apology, stressing that the mail-order bride business was outlawed.Manila's consul general to New York, Cecilia Rebon, was later asked to send a letter to the producers of the Letterman show and to Baldwin "to express deep concern over the derogatory remark," the government said.
